Face Technologies: A Specialist in Customized Smart Card and Biometrics Solutions

Johan Meyer, Business Development Manager
Today, we are witnessing a growing need among African countries to digitize and secure data sets and documents related to civil identity. By issuing individuals with legal documents that provide unique and reliable proof of their identity, governments can grant the full entitlement to streamline privileges to citizens across motor vehicle registration, driving license issue voting exercises with less fraud while compensating for the lack of a reliable civil register. Founded in 1993, Face Technologies provides customized end-to-end solutions that extend from a single stand-alone system to large integrated national systems such as Driving License -, Motor Vehicle Registration and Management -, Electoral - and ID Solutions. Face Technologies also provide project management, software development, training, and skills transfer services as part of their solutions.

Face technologies' Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) is a highly scalable identification and authentication platform that registers multiple biometrical information (fingerprints, facial, voice, iris) of individuals and ensures that each user is unique. ABIS is capable of performing one-to-many searches or one-to-one matches against large stores of documented biometrics by deploying biometric and text data to match algorithms across a cluster of multiple computing nodes."Once a person's information is captured on the system, ABIS ensures proper audit trails to prevent fraud. In a subsequent transaction, a customer is easily identified/verified utilizing his biometrics," explains Johan Meyer, Business Development Manager at Face Technologies. In addition, the ABIS solution comprises all aspects required for setting up complex identification applications such as a high-speed matching engine, fingerprint search-database management, and client-server architecture. Unlike other expensive ABIS systems, Face Technologies' ABIS can run on standard PC hardware and enterprise server environments with a scalable architecture, allowing the matching of server components to be installed on several computers to distribute workload and increase speed.

The biometrics gathered from ABIS are integrated into ''Smart Cards'' as security measures for system access and unique identification of people in Face Technologies’ solutions. Face Technologies provide paperless options for all government/personal documents and can be scanned and viewed online at any time. "By having an online, biometric stored in a paperless system, our customers can process applications at any online station with minimum effort," says Meyer.

The company's Smart Cards utilize the biometrics generated and stored in Chip Cards or encrypted 2D barcodes printed on their cards to ensure the integrity of these documents, making it impossible to replicate. Face Technologies' Smart Cards can be decrypted in an offline environment to display the encrypted information to the user, such as a driver's license or voter identification card. In an online scenario, a handheld device can also be used to verify or obtain the latest information of the person in question from a central database. Also, to modernize electoral rolls and empower organizations to identify individuals uniquely, Face Technologies is deploying its biometric identification systems and solutions, helping government organizations orchestrate civil services.
